Buoyancy - Shape

Reference: HD6
Category: Hydrodynamics
Purpose: Shows the importance of shape in buoyancy.
Description:
HD6&HD7: Hollow Perspex parallelepiped and cube, to be floated in large metal trough. Their effective mean density can be varied by loading axial rods with different numbers of brass disc weights or simply by pressing down on the rods with two pencils. Calculations of the centre of buoyancy show that a square-sectioned parallelepiped only tips one way, whereas a cube tubes both ways at once when loaded.
HD8: Long Perspex box with all sides oblong with shaft through centre.
