Purpose: Demonstrates the magnetic force.
Description: Stand the horseshoe magnet (found with the magnetic braking demonstration) vertical. Use retort stands to support two metal sticks horizontal and parallel to each other, on either side of the magnet, at roughly the height of the gap in the magnet. Rest a third stick across the two sticks, so that it passes through the gap in the magnet. Now complete the circuit made by the sticks by connecting them on either side to a 12V battery, through a switch. When the switch is closed, the top stick flies off due to the magnetic force of the current through the circuit.
